Active Living and Fitness

We strive to support the physical activity of Boston residents. You can get involved with our free fitness classes. We also support active transportation and ensure the safety of bicyclists and pedestrians.

Active Living means making physical activity part of your everyday life. Our goal is to promote ways to be active at work, school, home, and during leisure time to create life-long habits. We encourage active transportation methods, such as walking, biking, and rolling, as a key part of living actively. We manage and support Safe Routes to School and Vision Zero to make Boston’s streets safer for everybody.

Boston Parks Fitness Series

Join free in-person and virtual fitness classes led by certified instructors. Everyone is welcome at our free classes, regardless of your fitness level.

The 2025 Winter Fitness Series will run January - March. Check back soon for more information!

This initiative is a partnership between the Boston Parks and Recreation Department and the Boston Public Health Commission. It's sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts.

Safe and Active Transportation

Working closely with the Boston Transportation Department, Boston Planning Department, and Boston Bikes, the Active Living program works to increase physical activity by making it safer and more accessible to walk, bike, and roll across Boston.

We are focused on increasing neighborhood-organization led community engagement in active transportation planning projects across Boston.
