Building emissions policy open house #2

The City of Boston is developing a new policy to cut carbon pollution from large buildings.

September 28, 2020
2020-09-28T18:00:00 - 2020-09-28T19:30:00

This meeting is the second of three open houses. During this meeting, we’re going to answer some of the questions asked by attendees during the first open house in July. The second open house will include updates from the Technical and Resident Advisory Groups, and breakout discussions on specific areas of interest identified that were, including:

  1. Financing retrofits
  2. Designing for equity
  3. How to decarbonize a building

Large buildings in Boston are the biggest emitters of carbon pollution and they also represent the buildings that have the largest opportunity to cut their carbon emissions. This pollution comes from the oil and gas we burn to heat and power our homes and offices.

We're developing this policy as part of the implementation of Strategy #5 in the 2019 Climate Action Plan Update: Develop a carbon emissions performance standard to decarbonize existing large buildings. During the first meeting, we introduced the building performance standard, and the process to develop it and help inform the City’s process moving forward. You can view the meeting recording, slides, and breakout discussion notes on our project page.

The Zoom link for the meeting will be emailed to all attendees ahead of the meeting. Please let us know if you have any requests for accommodation when you register at the link below.

Building Energy Retrofit Resource Hub launch

Join the virtual launch event for a Building Energy Retrofit Resource Hub, a partnership with the Environment Department and Eversource Eversource Energy.

September 9, 2020
2020-09-09T12:00:00 - 2020-09-09T13:00:00

The City of Boston and Eversource are partnering to launch a Building Energy Retrofit Resource Hub. This resource will make it easier for large building owners, operators, tenants, and stakeholders to reduce their energy use and carbon emissions and save money.  It will help you find the best solutions for your building by helping you understand, access, and implement Eversource’s expertise, energy efficiency services and incentives.

Large buildings account for nearly 70% of carbon emissions in Boston. As we strive towards carbon neutrality by 2050, the Building Energy Reporting and Disclosure Ordinance (BERDO) and the Resource Hub will continue to work with residents to become more aware of their emissions and responsible for their reductions.

The virtual launch event will include short presentations from:

  • Carl Spector, Commissioner of the Environment Department
  • Benjamin Silverman, Climate and Buildings Program Manager
  • Steven Miller, Eversource Energy Efficiency Consultant

A changing climate: Anti-racism and Boston's environmental justice

Reason for cancellation: Contact organizer
July 30, 2020
2020-07-30T17:30:00 - 2020-07-30T20:00:00

"A Changing Climate: Anti-Racism and Boston's Environmental Justice" will address the topic of how systemic racism affects Boston's climate and environmental work to create disparate realities for Black communities in Boston. Black communities in Boston are disproportionately climate and environmental justice communities, as the projections of all of the greatest climate impacts will drastically impact this community. This is common not only in these impacts, but also within the realm of rampant income and wealth disparities, gentrification and displacement, and many other societal impacts. At the core, each of these come from the same source: systemic racism.

As Boston has pledged to be a leader in combatting racism and racism has been listed as a public health crisis, this conversation serves as the beginning of an effort to combat the racism that exists in climate and environmental work. This is all to take powerful steps forward to completely rid Boston of the insidious residue of racism. Anti-racism is powerful in how we must accomplish these lofty goals, as it aims to change the structures that allow for racism, in all of its forms, to pervade our society. We must integrate this ideology and practice into all facets of our society to counteract the effects racism has had on the Black community's ability to be strong, thriving, and resilient to any danger.

If you are interested in participating in this conversation, please complete our registration form. If you have any questions, feel free to email David Corbie at David.Corbie@Boston.Gov.

The Youth Climate Leaders Program is meant to develop and give the necessary tools to take climate leadership in a constantly changing climate. The program culminates in workshops that expose them to different leaders in the climate and environment field to start preparing them for the future of climate change. They will also learn how to organize climate actions and undertake/support the efforts that they are leading. Due to the vulnerability that youth pose, not only now, but in the future as the impacts of climate change are exacerbated, they must take leadership now and develop the framework by which they address climate change.

This seminar will highlight the current climate and sustainability work happening in the City of Boston, and the people that do this work.
