Downtown Crossing Street Improvements

Downtown Crossing is the heart of Boston. We will make key improvements to its streets to ensure that it remains a vibrant, inclusive area for decades to come.

We're planning to redesign and reconstruct streets in Downtown Crossing. Our goal is to improve the experience of all who live, work, visit, go to school, and shop in the district. We will improve conditions for people walking and seek to reduce conflicts between pedestrians, loading activities, and bicycles. We also want to strengthen connections to public transit and public spaces.

Specific improvements will include:
  • sidewalks that are accessible
  • lighting upgrades
  • transportation safety improvements, and
  • introducing trees and other greenery
  • revision of regulations for loading and vehicular access

We plan to make improvements to the following streets:

  • Washington Street (from Temple Place to School Street)
  • Bromfield Street
  • School Street
  • Summer Street (from Washington Street to Hawley Street)
  • Winter Street
