William Fenton 'Bill' Russell Bridge
Public Works is designing a replacement for the bridge in Charlestown. MassDOT will construct the new bridge.
The new bridge will complement the Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge next door. The new bridge will be walkable, multi-modal, green, and sustainable. Everyone will be able to safely use the bridge. That includes pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists.
The design calls for:
- wider sidewalks
- gathering places
- innovative accent lighting
- protected bicycle facilities, and
- smoother walking surfaces to support the Freedom Trail.
