Fixit Clinic: Boston Building Resources

Explore troubleshooting and repair with volunteer Fixit coaches.

May 17, 2025
2025-05-17T11:00:00 - 2025-05-17T14:00:00

Fixit Clinics are free workshops where people bring broken stuff—from bikes to blenders to blazers—and volunteer Fixit Coaches share their time, tools, and know-how to help troubleshoot and (hopefully) repair items. These meet-ups build hands-on skills, confidence, community, and a culture of reuse and repair. The City of Boston Environment Department is partnering with Boston community groups to offer these events across our neighborhoods.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
  • A broken gadget, small appliance, computer, toy, textile good, or other item

  • Useful tools and parts, if you have them

  • A description of what’s wrong and anything you’ve tried to fix it—advance online research is helpful

  • A desire to learn and share your knowledge!

These events are family-friendly and open to all. Interested in becoming a Fixit Coach yourself? Come lend a hand.

Mission Hill Coffee Hour with the Mayor

Join Mayor Michelle Wu and City Staff for coffee and conversation!

May 5, 2025
2025-05-05T10:00:00 - 2025-05-05T11:00:00

Mission Hill Coffee Hour

Mayor Wu’s Neighborhood Coffee Hours offer a unique opportunity to speak directly with the Mayor and staff from City departments about City services and resident concerns. Through personal conversations, and a suggestion box at each site, Mayor Wu looks forward to hearing how the City of Boston can improve parks, public areas, and City services.

A neighborhood staple known for bringing the community together over a cup of coffee, Dunkin’ is back to fuel the conversation with iced coffee and donuts. Dunkin’ will also provide lawn game activities for attendees, gift card giveaways, and the opportunity for residents to win a raffle prize. Free flowering plants will be provided by the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, while supplies last. Fresh fruit will be provided by Star Market.

Coffee hours are held from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m., unless otherwise noted due to inclement weather.

Age Strong is conducting a needs assessment to learn more about the needs, concerns, and priorities of Boston’s older adults. Information will be gathered via surveys, focus groups, and listening sessions to learn more about the experiences of older adults and their caregivers. The goal is to create an Age Strong Plan which aims to make Boston inclusive and accessible to people of all ages. This is a valuable opportunity to let your voice be heard! We want to hear your ideas about how we can make Boston a better place to age.

Language interpretation and translation services and disability accommodations are available to you at no cost. If you need them, please contact Ava Portela at ava.portela@boston.gov, or call 617-635-1953.

Mission Hill Transportation Planning: Terrace and Parker Street

We are planning safety and accessibility improvements for all road users traveling on Terrace Street and Parker Street in the Mission Hill neighborhood.

The Transportation Department is conducting the Mission Hill Transportation Project in response to community concerns about recent development projects on Terrace Street. While this growth creates vital housing opportunities, it raises questions about how neighborhood streets will evolve to support safe, comfortable travel for all road users. Community interests expressed through the development review process so far include:

  • wide, comfortable and accessible sidewalks
  • access to public transportation
  • traffic calming to reduce speeding and cut through traffic
  • safe bicycle connections through the neighborhood, and
  • public space improvements, among others.

About the Project

Project Information

People traveling on Terrace Street and Parker Street today experience:

  • narrow sidewalks
  • frequent cut-through traffic, and
  • limited amenities for people walking (e.g., trees, street furniture, lighting).

The City’s Vision Zero program has identified a higher number of pedestrian injury crashes along both Terrace Street and Parker Street, as well as at key intersections in the study area. These two streets also lack comfortable walking and biking connections to mass transit at:

  • Jackson Square and Roxbury Crossing, and
  • the Southwest Corridor Park.

Our work on the Mission Hill Transportation Planning Project will redesign Terrace Street and Parker Street. We will prioritize the safety and comfort of vulnerable road users. We want to ensure safety for all, improve access to public transportation, and enhance the quality of public space.

Mission Hill Transportation Project Map

Planning and Design Goals

The Mission Hill Transportation Planning Project will focus on five design goals:

  1. Prioritizing walking, pedestrian safety, and accessibility
  2. Prioritizing transit
  3. Bicycle safety and comfort
  4. Managing multimodal traffic
  5. Public realm improvements

These goals will further many of the City’s goals established in:

  • the Vision Zero program, which aims to eliminate fatal and serious traffic crashes, and
  • Go Boston 2030, which aims to increase walking and biking.

Specific improvements that will be considered include:

  • wider sidewalks
  • pedestrian crossings
  • ADA compliance
  • traffic calming
  • public space improvements, and
  • safe bicycle connections.

The City of Boston is working with the MBTA, other agencies, and you and your neighbors to design accessible Green Line boarding platforms on Huntington and South Huntington Avenues to provide safe and barrier-free access to transit. This will enable E Branch riders to board trains without stepping into the middle of the street, and will allow for the operation of the MBTA's new Green Line trains by 2027. Building on the goals outlined in GoBoston 2030 for Huntington Avenue and South Huntington Avenue from Brigham Circle to Heath Street, this project also seeks to improve safety on the roadway for all users, and meet our commitments for safe pedestrian and bicycle facilities.

Accessibility

We will ensure all transit riders can wait comfortably at their bus stops and board the bus and train safely. This includes accessibility for people with disabilities and users of mobility devices.

Reliability

We will design infrastructure and signal improvements to help buses and trains run on schedule and provide transit service that you can rely on.

Safety

We will improve safety and make changes to the roadway to reduce the likelihood of serious crashes on this street. We will make Huntington Ave. and South Huntington Ave. safer and friendlier streets for vulnerable road users.

Project Goals

Huntington and South Huntington Avenue is a transit priority corridor for the City of Boston, serving some of Boston’s densest neighborhoods.  Today, E-Branch stops from Brigham's Circle to Heath Street present safety and accessibility challenges for riders.  Trains share the center lanes with cars, and passengers must get on and off the train in the middle of the road. These conditions along Huntington and South Huntington Aves make these streets both less safe and reliable for people biking, walking, driving, and taking transit.

The City of Boston and the MBTA are working together to enable accessible boarding on the E-Branch of the Green Line and make these streets safer for the whole neighborhood.  We want to hear your thoughts on transportation, public space, and safety. Whether your trips are made on foot, by bike, by car, or on a bus, we want to hear from you. Please join our email list to stay updated on meetings, progress reports, and presentations.
