Supporting Positive Athlete Behavior Through Responsive Coaching

Register Online

Positive Coaching Alliance Tobin Municipal Building Every coach has been there: athletes who are not able to follow directions, disruptions during practice, or a player who just can’t seem to focus. It’s frustrating and it’s easy to assume it's all about attitude or effort. But what if it’s not? What if misbehavior is a signal, not a choice? This workshop gives coaches the tools to respond with purpose, building connection and accountability while keeping practices productive and athletes growing.

What coaches will gain:
  • Strategies to handle challenging behavior without losing focus or control
  • Tools to regulate their own emotions and coach with clarity under pressure
  • A framework for building consistent routines that keep athletes engaged
  • Tips for designing practices that are inclusive, dynamic, and supportive
  • A restorative mindset that builds trust, teaches life skills, and still holds the line on expectations

Motivational Interviewing for Youth Workers

Register Online

Health Resources in Action Tobin Municipal Building This 3-hour interactive training explores Motivational Interviewing as a strategy for working with young people. Motivational Interviewing (MI) refers to a counseling approach developed by clinical psychologists Professor William R. Miller, Ph.D. and Professor Stephen Rollnick, Ph.D. MI is a goal-oriented, client-centered counseling style for supporting behavior change. In this training, we have adapted this counseling style for youth work practitioners working in youth programs. This training is a very hands-on approach to supporting youth, specifically in examining risky or problematic behaviors. Participants will take away tools and activities to use with the young people that they work with.

Coaching with Empathy

Register Online

Positive Coaching Alliance Tobin Municipal Building Creating a positive, developmental youth sports environment for your young athletes starts with the coach. The highly interactive Coaching with Empathy workshop provides coaches with the tools to build meaningful, understanding relationships with and amongst their team - and unlock the many benefits that sports can provide. This research-based two-hour* workshop demonstrates how to seamlessly integrate empathy into everyday coaching by creating strong connections, listening to athletes, and understanding how kids’ experiences impact how they show up to your practices. Coaches will actively participate in the workshop, including small group discussions and will practice applying the tools to real team settings. Coaches will take away tangible tools and tips to create an empathetic environment with their team so all kids feel safe, seen, heard, and valued.

In this workshop coaches will learn about:
  • The impact of stress on young people
  • The role of empathetic coaches
  • How each coach’s own experience impacts their relationships with athletes
  • The “PACT” - our framework for applying empathy
  • How to apply the “PACT” action steps
