Boston City Insider: A career networking event
More than 130 students, alumni, and community members from all walks of life and educational background attended this career networking event.
In partnership with the University of Massachusetts Boston Office of Career Services and Internships and the Mayor’s Office of Community Partnerships, we hosted the first "Boston City Insider" career networking event at UMass Boston. This career fair fell under the Diversity Office Quarterly Neighborhood Career Fair Series. It was part of Mayor Walsh’s ongoing initiatives to create and nurture a diverse pipeline of student talent that is ready for public service career opportunities in municipal government.
More than 130 students, alumni, and community members from all walks of life and educational background attended this career networking event. The attendees networked and engaged with recruiters from multiple Boston City Departments, including representatives from our quasi-agencies, such as Boston Planning & Development Agency, Boston Public Health Commission, and Boston Water Sewer Commission.
Information that was shared during the event included:
- how to apply online effectively
- new initiatives that the City is undertaking for climate change readiness, and
- potential projects new talent can expect to be a part of.
Students and Alumni shared with employers heartwarming stories of what inspires them and why they want to serve the public. Of the attendees surveyed, we found:
- more than 70% of attendees said their overall experience at the event was between great to excellent
- more than 70% of attendees made meaningful connections
- more than 80% of attendees reported as receiving useful information for their career advancement, and
- more than 80% were more informed about the opportunities available with the City.
Demographics included: 47% women, 42% Black, and 12% Asian.
The success of this event was truly a reaffirmation of what is possible through collaboration. We look forward to building on this shared commitment to finding, developing, and elevating a diverse pipeline of student talent and candidates that are ready for a career in local government.
