Dana Avenue Bridge

The Dana Avenue Bridge spans the Neponset River in Hyde Park. It was built in 1908 and is one of the oldest City-owned bridges in Boston.

The two-lane, concrete arch bridge is in need of a replacement. We’ve evaluated different construction techniques to minimize the overall impact to the Hyde Park community. We’re also focused on minimizing how long this project will take.

Project timeline

Project start and traffic closures

The current plan calls for a two-month, full closure of the bridge. We expect that to start in July 2019. The closure will restrict all traffic on the bridge and all river traffic under the bridge. But, we will maintain pedestrian access over the bridge throughout construction. Vehicular traffic will be detoured to the River Street, Fairmont Avenue corridor off Cleary Square.

The new bridge will be similar in design, and includes the graceful double arch of the current bridge.

Upcoming deadlines

  • Design completed: December 2018
  • Bid/Award for project: April 2019
