Many exhibits on display this May at City Hall galleries

It is a special month for City Hall, because in addition to the exhibits on display in the building’s three galleries, more than 400 works of art by students from 35 schools are adorning the walls of the building as part of National Youth Arts Month. 

“It’s great to see artwork representing Boston’s diverse population everywhere you look in City Hall,” said Mayor Walsh. “In addition to brightening up the building, it embodies the creativity and talent of the people of Boston.”

In addition to the Boston Public Schools Youth Art Month exhibit, this month’s shows include: 

• Hyde Park Art Association’s 29th Annual Juried Exhibition, on display in the 3rd Floor Scollay Square Gallery, features a broad range of art by Hyde Park artists including photography, watercolor, oil painting and sculpture. The exhibit has been on display since April and will end on May 11, 2018. 
• Patricia Thaxton Exhibit, on display in the 5th Floor Mayor’s Gallery through the month of May, features the work of Boston-based visual artist and former Boston Public Schools teacher Patricia Thaxton. Specializing in mixed media collage, her work is a collection of ideas and images from sketchbooks dated from the 1970s to the present.

• ParkARTS: Annual Swans in the Park, currently on display on the 2nd Floor lobby steps, showcases works of art by local students that depict the swans in the Boston Public Garden. The exhibit will be up throughout the month of May
• Mayor’s Poetry Program, currently on display throughout Boston City Hall, features poems submitted by Boston-based writers that focus on the theme of Boston’s diverse neighborhoods. A reading of selected poems hosted by Boston Poet Laureate Danielle Legros Georges will take place from 12-1 p.m. on May 3, 2018 in City Hall, and the poems will be displayed on the walls of City Hall for one year. 
• Preservation Month Exhibit, currently on display on the 5th floor balcony of City Hall, is part of the Boston Landmark Commission’s celebration of National Preservation Month. A kickoff event to celebrate City Hall’s 50th anniversary will be held on May 4, 2018, and the exhibit will be on display throughout the month of May. Preservation Month features dozens of free public programs all over Boston.
• Handel and Haydn: MassArt Hercules Illustrations, an exhibit on display in the 2nd Floor Mayor’s Neighborhood Gallery from May 8 -  June 10, 2018, features artwork by MassArt’s junior illustration students as part of their annual partnership with the Handel and Haydn Society. This year, 64 students created visual interpretations of Handel Hercules, a musical drama composed in 1774. 

• Animals in City Hall, an exhibit on display in the 3rd Floor Scollay Square Gallery from May 15 - June 15, 2018, showcases the work of four artists who each use a different medium to portray their perceptions of the animal kingdom. 

“One of the goals outlined in the Boston Creates cultural plan is to recognize and support artists’ essential contribution to creating and maintaining a thriving, healthy, and innovative city,” said Julie Burros, Chief of Arts and Culture. “These exhibits on display at City Hall are a great way to celebrate artists of every age, experience level, and cultural background.”
