Digital Creative portfolio

The Digital Team's design staff aims to build up an energetic group of designers at the City of Boston.

Since the launch of Boston.gov in July 2016, the City's brand has continued to expand and so have the creative needs of the City. As the City creative staff, we meet the mission of the Digital Team and support the needs of all City departments. We use design and storytelling to create the best possible tools and experiences for residents and visitors.

'Now Hiring' Campaign

We kicked off the 2017 public service week with an eye-catching new hiring campaign. Videos from the campaign became some of the most shared videos the City has ever produced.

'Everyone is Welcome Here' poster

In February 2017, we launched a simple poster to make all community members feel accepted at City Hall. The poster became so popular that we made it available for download on Boston.gov.

Preservation Month bookmarks

We were asked by the Landmarks Commission to energize the standard fare for Preservation Month. The resulting designs have been printed multiple times, and were also featured in local publications.

B is for boston

Delivery workers B

For many major holidays, the City sends out a graphic or message on our social channels depicting custom Bs.

With hundreds of holidays, we can't create custom work for all of them. That’s where the artists of Boston come in. We work with the Office of Arts and Culture to launch a call for B submissions from local artists. The call for submissions gives us the opportunity to showcase the Boston brand while promoting local artists.

Food Resources Map

In May 2017, the Office of Food Access and the Boston Public Health Commission approached us with a project idea. They wanted to create a map for people struggling to find and pay for food in the City. We put together a useful, accessible map that’s also beautiful to look at.

Upgrades

Sometimes a vendor or employee doesn't fully take advantage of the City's brand. In these cases, we step in to help reshape the work. We also use these moments as a teaching opportunity to show off how best to use our brand.  We want all of our vendors and employees to be empowered to use the brand.

Before

Transportation reached out to us with this design. They felt like the information could be more clear, and they wanted to use our brand.

AFTER

We started this redesign by organizing the content under headers to make it easier to read. We also standardized the size of the typeface so there was a clear hierarchy. Dropping non-brand colors provided the final touch.

Before

When asked to evaluate this social media design, we noticed some inconsistencies with our current brand.

After

We removed the background photos and cleaned up the partner logos. We also created an illustration of an ice cream cone to reinforce the reward of signing up to vote. We then formatted the design to the right sizes for social media.

'Help for Houston' campaign

In 2017, we held a 'Help for Houston' drive for those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Within just a few hours, we were able to create online graphics and physical posters. The designs helped us quickly get the word out.
