Improvements to Sherrin Street Woods Urban Wild

Phase II Project will include restoration of the wetland buffer and roadside plantings, and improvements to storm water management.

Phase I Project included renovation to trailheads, trails and wetland buffer restoration.

Sherrin Street Woods Urban Wild is the third largest City-owned urban wild site. The site offers local residents passive recreation and natural history education, as well as aesthetic values. The urban wild is between the MBTA commuter rail tracks and Austin Street, north of West Street.

The northern half of the site features a rocky outcrop, known as Pine Rock, and forest comprised of:

  • mature oaks
  • hickory
  • cherry, and
  • birch.

The southern part of the site features filled-in stream channels and wetlands. These have developed into a dense, weedy thicket of non-native, invasive shrubs and small trees. There are trails traversing the northern part of the site.
