BPS Indian Education Grant
We want to support the unique cultural, language, and educational needs of American Indian students.
WHY WE did THIS
The City of Boston, Boston Public Schools (BPS) and UMass Boston’s Institute for New England Native American Studies (INENAS) were awarded grant funding to revitalize Indian Education programming. This grant from the Department of Education is designed to address the unique cultural, language, and educationally related academic needs of American Indian and Alaska Native students, including preschool children. The programs funded are to meet the unique cultural, language, and educational needs of American Indian students and ensure that all students meet the challenging State academic standard. MONUM worked to make sure this was available to our community by identifying the opportunity for BPS, applying for the grant, organizing outreach and committee organization, and organizing student activities.
WHAT WE ARE DOING
For the past two years we have been building a relationship with the Partnerships team at BPS and INENAS to secure this grant. At this time, we are just continuing to ensure that BPS and INENAS continue their partnership.
LESSONS LEARNED
It’s so important to identify roles and responsibilities for all those who need to be involved. This can be heard when you are crossing departments of cabinets. Once you have identified all the pieces and who is responsible for what, you are ready to role.
