Boston MBTA Shutdowns 2024

This page offers information and resources for Boston Residents impacted by MBTA shutdowns in 2024.

The MBTA is currently conducting the Track Improvement Program, a major track repair and replacement initiative to eliminate 191 speed restrictions, as of November 2023, and bring all tracks into a five-year state of good repair by the end of 2024. To complete this program, the MBTA has scheduled periodic shutdowns on all four subway lines. During shutdowns, diversion shuttles will be provided between closed stops. 

The City of Boston is collaborating closely with community partners to ensure riders have access to vital information. This page serves as a hub for essential resources designed to help you navigate through the upcoming shutdowns seamlessly. Upcoming Red Line Shutdowns

 

Red Line Closure Diagram November 18-24 2024

November 17-24: The MBTA is closing the Red Line from Harvard to Broadway from 8:30pm on November 17, and then for the full days of service from November 18-24 for critical track repairs. The closure will extend to JFK/UMass on November 24. Shuttle service will be provided, but some downtown shuttle stops will vary from existing Red Line stations. Shuttles will not be directly servicing Park St or Downtown Crossing. Board shuttles at Haymarket or State. Commuter Rail will be fare-free between Porter Square and North Station & Braintree and South Station. 

BlueBikes Promotion:

During the shutdowns, riders will be able to use the code MBTAREDNOV for 5 free unlocks beginning 11/5, and MBTAREDNOV18 for 5 free unlocks beginning 11/18.

 

IMPACTS
  • Red Line Riders will be impacted as Red Line service will be replaced with commuter rail service and shuttles.
    • NOTE: Downtown shuttle stations will not be the same as Red Line subway stations. Visit the MBTA Red Line page for more information.

      Downtown Crossing will be served by two existing bus stops: Franklin at Federal for the inbound shuttle and Summer at Otis for the outbound shuttle. 
    • Park Street will not be served directly. Please use the Franklin at Federal and Summer at Otis shuttle stops to access this area, or transfer to the Green Line at Haymarket to access the station.
    • The shuttle will serve State Street and Haymarket Stations, which are not typically served on the Red Line. Use these points to transfer to Orange Line, Green Line, and Blue Line directly.
    • Riders should utilize the fare-free Commuter Rail when possible. Visit the MBTA Red Line page for more information.
    • Riders using shuttle buses during this service change should budget extra traveling time.
  • Residents who drive will experience heavy congestion along the shuttle route. Please avoid driving along the route and remember to stay local to your neighborhood whenever possible!
  • Temporary removal of parking spaces to accommodate shuttle movements, shuttle stops, and pop-up bus lanes.
    • Parking will be restricted on sections of:
      • Cambridge St
      • Otis St
      • Summer St
      • W Broadway
      • Foundry St
    • Pop up bus lanes will be added to the following streets:
      • Congress St
      • Summer Street
  • Cyclists will experience increased traffic due to heavy shuttle bus traffic on the route. Please use caution when navigating around buses.

Green Line November 11-17 Closure Diagram

November 11-17:

Green Line D Branch: Service is suspended between Union Square and Lechmere, Nov. 11-17 due to track work. Riders can use bus routes 86 and 91 between Union and East Somerville Station on the Medford Branch.

No shuttle bus service to Union Square. Riders can instead use bus routes 86 and 91 between Union and East Somerville Station on the Medford Branch. These bus routes also travel to Sullivan Square on the Orange Line. Additionally, Route 87 travels between Union Square and Lechmere. See the MBTA Green Line page for most up-to-date information.

November 15-17:

Green Line E Branch: No train service between Park St and East Somerville from 8:30 PM on Friday, Nov. 15, through Sunday, Nov. 17, due to track work. Use shuttle buses between East Somerville and North Station. Use Orange Line downtown.

 

December 6-20:

Green Line D Branch: No train service from Park St to Union Square Friday December 6 to Friday December 20 due to track work.

Green Line E Branch: No service from Park St to Medford/Tufts Friday December 6 to Friday December 20 due to track work.

Use shuttle buses between Medford/Tufts and North Station. Use Orange Line downtown. See the MBTA Green Line page for most up-to-date information.
