LinkedInsights: Sahil Nisha

In our COB #LinkedInSights series, we introduce real City employees to provide a snapshot of who they are, what they do, and why they serve the City of Boston — so you can read, learn, connect, and grow your network one impactful public servant at a time.

Building a thoughtful and actionable professional network on LinkedIn can seem daunting. Who should you connect with and why? And how do you build a connection with the person behind the profile?

In this month’s edition of COB #LinkedInSights, we sit down with Sahil Nisha from the Mayor's Speechwriting team.

⭕ What is your job title?

Speechwriter for Mayor Wu.

⭕ How long have you worked for the City?

I just reached my 2 year mark in May!

⭕ What is your favorite part about working for the City?

Meeting my colleagues in various departments, they’re so passionate about what they do. It gives me life seeing what gets everyone excited about their niche within the City!

I’ve always wanted to be a writer—even if I took some detours along the way—and have a deep love for language. I love playing with it, breaking it, building it up in ways that sometimes work and sometimes don’t.

I try to stay curious and am constantly looking for something new to learn—about myself, about you, about the world around us.

⭕ Why did you choose this career path?

I graduated college in Spring 2020 and I wanted to somehow make a living writing. I had a close connection with a professor at my school and he told me that the Mayor—at the time, Kim Janey—was hiring a speechwriter. My writing had always taken on political elements (although I think all writing is inherently political), but this was my first time writing for politics. I’ve now worked for two mayoral administrations and am so grateful for all the people I get to work with.

⭕ Do you have a piece of advice for others?

Slow down, stay curious, stay silly.

⭕ What are some things that you like to do outside of work?

Working on my own creative writing, reading, seeing my friends, and, more recently, dancing! (I’m trying to come out of my shell a bit).

⭕ WHAT IS a fun fact about you?

I play ultimate frisbee!

⭕ IF YOU COULD HAVE A SUPERPOWER, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

To control time—freeze it or rewind, make it move faster or slower.

⭕ What keeps you motivated at work?

Two things jump to mind: the people I get to work with and seeing the words we write come to life.

⭕ Have you taken the Harry Potter quiz, if so, what house were you sorted into? If you want to take it, visit here. Click on Hogwarts Sorting Experience and sign-up.

Ravenclaw! (Emily wouldn’t let me leave the interview until I took the quiz).
