Celebrating May as National Building Safety Month

Today, Mayor Janey designates May as National Building Safety Month for the City of Boston. The proclamation emphasizes the importance of the building codes, certification and permitting processes, and encourages residents and property owners to be vigilant about helping to identify and report potential building safety issues.

“With Boston being one of the oldest cities in America it is imperative that we do our due diligence when maintaining the structural integrity of our buildings, “ said Mayor Janey.  “I am  proud and honored to be able to lead our great team of building inspectors who make sure where we live, work and play are code compliant.”

In honor of National Building Safety Month (BSM)  the Inspectional Services Department (ISD) will launch the “What Goes Up May Come Down: Prevent, Prepare and Protect” public awareness campaign.  This multi-prong campaign is an effort to bring awareness to the ordinary citizen and the important role that they and code officials play in enhancing quality of life by helping to sustain safe living conditions for residents, businesses and communities throughout Boston.  In conjunction with the multi-prong outreach ISD will also align the Department’s inspection and certification process with current codes, by updating its Facade and Egress policies.    

“Building Safety Month is more relevant than ever in educating the public about the increasingly important role modern building codes play in keeping our homes and communities strong and resilient,” said Commissioner Sean Lydon.

Week Three, Thursday, May 20, 2021

Inspectors will conduct random inspections of building exterior structures. If a code infraction is found inspectors will leave a door knocker on the property indicating the deficiencies and a brief note on appropriate corrective measures. Inspectors will also keep a log for properties visited and infractions for follow-up.
