Let’s build a fairy house!
Ever wonder where fairies like Tinkerbell or Cinderella's Fairy godmother live? Fairy houses of course!
What are Fairy Houses?
Fairy Houses are small structures for fairies and woodland creatures to live in. These whimsical habitats are built by children, families, gardeners and nature lovers alike.
Fairy house building is a fun and creative activity for children that encourages kids to go outside and connect with the natural world, in an environmentally friendly way.
Not sure How sure how to make a fairy house? Don’t worry, members of the Mayor’s Mural crew have come up with step-by-step instructions of how to create your very own fairy house in a park near you.
Step 1: Pick a Location
Fairy Houses can take many forms and can be created in many different places. Find a quiet place away from roads or busy pathways. The base of a tree or the side of a rock could be just right. Close to the ground is usually best.
The Mural Crew made their fairy house at Franklin Park, but any area in the woods, on a beach, meadow, or even your own backyard will do! Use only natural materials to build your house, nothing artificial.
Step 2: Find your Materials
Sticks, bark, dry grasses, pebbles, shells, feathers, seaweed, pinecones, and nuts are just some of the materials you can use. A fairy house built in the woods will look different than one built at the beach!
Different seasons will give constantly changing materials that you can use. Be imaginative!
Step 3: Get creative
Be respectful of plants that are growing. Try not to disturb plants that are still living. Fairies are careful not to harm anything that is growing.
Step 4: Make it feel like home
Many fairy houses look so natural that they are almost hidden. Have fun building them everywhere, in every season, and enjoy all of your special visitors!
