City Council Committee on Ways and Means Hearing on Dockets #0588-0596, FY21 Budget: BPS and COVID-19

One of a series of hearings to review the FY21 Budget. The focus of this hearing is the FY21 Budget for the Boston Public Schools (BPS) - Closing Opportunity Gaps in the context of COVID-19.

Update 5/22: Due to the interest surrounding the impact of COVID-19 on the BPS budget, operations, and students, in addition to the release of new CDC guidelines for schools, this hearing will now focus entirely on BPS plans regarding closing opportunity gaps in the context of COVID-19. This will include the Spring 2020 response in progress, plans to support students during Summer 2020, key considerations and financial implications of re-opening schools in Fall 2020, and long-term financial impacts of COVID-19 beyond FY21. BPS Commitment #6, will be heard with BPS Commitment #5 at the 10am session.

    In accordance with Governor Baker's March 12, 2020 Executive Order modifying certain requirements of the Open Meeting Law and relieving public bodies of certain requirements, including the requirement that public bodies conduct its meetings in a public place that is open and physically accessible to the public, the City Council will be conducting this hearing virtually. This enables the City Council to carry out its responsibilities while adhering to public health recommendations and ensuring public access to its deliberations through adequate, alternative means.  The public may watch these hearings via live-stream at boston.gov/city-council-tv. They will also be broadcast live or rebroadcast on Comcast 8/RCN 82/Verizon 1964.
