Veterans, thank you for your service

This week, the City Council adopted a resolution commemorating Veterans Day and honoring all those who served in the military for our country.

Veterans Day is celebrated every year on November 11 in remembrance of the end of World War I, as well as to honor all those who served in the U.S. military.

On November 11, 1918, an armistice went into effect between the Allied nations and Germany, temporarily ceasing hostilities until the Treaty of Versailles was signed in June 1919, and thus many regard November 11, 1918, as the end of World War I.

In November 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the day to commemorate Armistice Day to remember the lives lost in the war as well as the heroism of those who served. In May 1938, November 11 of every year was made a legal holiday.

On Veterans Day and every day, the Council continues to support veterans and military families in Boston. To all those who have served, thank you for your service.
