Protecting mental health during social distancing

This week, the City Council adopted a resolution urging the City of Boston to prioritize mental health in the public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Physical distancing and social isolation have exacerbated mental health challenges during the current public health crisis, particularly for people who live alone, those who have lost their jobs or have a loved one who has fallen ill, and people who were already disproportionately struggling to care for their mental wellness.

The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that healthcare workers, first responders, and other essential workers at the forefront are likely to be experiencing increased levels of stress and anxiety, and “keeping all staff protected from chronic stress and poor mental health during this response means that they will have a better capacity to fulfill their roles.”

This week, the Council adopted a resolution urging the City of Boston to prioritize mental health in the public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic by creating a mental health support fund to fill gaps for mental health care services for City employees and residents when those services are not covered by health insurance companies. Other ideas include displaying a webpage specifically for mental health resources, promoting a print and tv campaign urging residents to care for themselves and seek support, and to potentially expand access to telehealth and other mental health resources.
