Pics in the Parks snaps parks into focus

The 2020 Pics in the Parks program encouraged residents and visitors to explore Boston’s Parks in a socially distant manner while improving their photography skills.

Every Tuesday throughout the summer the Boston Park's Department released 12 challenges coupled with tips and photo tricks. Participants were invited to share their view of Boston’s Parks from alternate perspectives.

Dasies

A large number of participants shared their photos using #PicsintheParks on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Additionally nearly 200 photos were submitted from 25 unique participants, many of whom participated repeatedly on multiple challenges, for a chance to be named the best of the week. A range of up to a dozen weekly participants submitted their photos by email. Our favorite photos from each challenge were selected to be displayed in the Digital Pics in the Parks Art Gallery.

Each Pics in the Park video was viewed about 5,000 times across Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter on the Parks Department feeds as well as the City of Boston feeds. Additionally, the challenges were broadcast to approximately a thousand people at the drive-in movie series and they were broadcast on Boston City TV. Challenges were also explained in written form on the COB website.

We received quite a few positive comments from participants who enjoyed the challenges, the opportunity to get out into Boston’s Parks and improved their photography skills. Terese was excited to learn about the bounce feature on Instagram for the motion challenge. Nancy enjoyed the filters exercise which gave her the opportunity to experiment.

While the official submission period for the program is over, the photo tips and challenges will remain online for interested parties looking to improve their skills and take on new challenges to see Boston’s Parks in a new perspective.
