Patriots Day Weekend 2019

We have information about parking and street closures for the Boston Marathon, Patriots Day Parade, BAA 5K, Invitational Mile, and Kids Relay Races.

The Boston Marathon and the City’s Patriots Day Parade will be held on Monday, April 15. The BAA 5K and Invitational Mile will be held on Saturday, April 13. During the weekend, there will be street closures and parking restrictions in the Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Brighton, Fenway-Kenmore, the North End, and Government Center.

  • City services on Monday, April 15

    • All City buildings, including schools and libraries, are closed.
    • Parking meters are free with no time limit. But, you won't be able to park at many metered locations in the City. Please check posted signs on the street.
    • The City tow lot is closed, but automated kiosks are still available for vehicle releases.

    Patriots Day weekend street closures

    Starting Wednesday, April 10, through Tuesday, April 16, Dartmouth Street is closed to traffic between Saint James Avenue and Boylston Street.

    We expect Dartmouth Street to reopen at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

    The following streets will be closed to traffic on Monday, April 15:

    • 3:30 a.m.: Berkeley Street, between St. James Avenue and Newbury Street, and Boylston Street, from Berkeley Street to Arlington Street
    • 5 a.m.: Charles Street and Boylston Street, next to the Boston Common and Public Garden
    • 6 a.m.: Boylston Street, Hereford Street to Berkeley Street
    • 8 a.m.: Streets east of Massachusetts Avenue and Massachusetts Turnpike Exit 22
    • 8 a.m.: Streets west of Massachusetts Avenue in the Kenmore Square Audubon Circle area
    • 8:30 a.m.: Streets in the Brighton area leading to the route

    We expect to reopen Boylston Street at 8 p.m. All other streets are expected to reopen at 7 p.m.

    PATRIOTS DAY PARADE, MONDAY, APRIL 15

    The parade will begin at 9 a.m. at City Hall Plaza. Participants will march:

    • from Court Street to Cambridge Street to Tremont Street
    • left to Bromfield Street
    • left to Washington Street
    • right to State Street
    • left to Congress Street
    • right to Hanover Street, and
    • end at the Paul Revere Mall.

    Streets along the route will be closed to traffic briefly as the parade proceeds. Hanover Street at the Paul Revere Mall will close at 7 a.m.

    One Boston Day 2019

    April 15, 2015, marked the beginning of a new annual Boston tradition. Each year, the day serves as an opportunity to celebrate the resiliency, generosity, and strength of the people of Boston.

    One Boston Day details

    Saturday street closures

    On Saturday, April 13, we will close streets along the routes of the B.A.A. 5K and the Invitational Mile to traffic. We expect to reopen all streets by 3 p.m.

    B.A.A. 5K

    At 6 a.m., we will prohibit traffic on Charles Street, between Boylston Street and Beacon Street.  The 5K will begin at 8 a.m. on Charles Street, near the Center Gate of the Public Garden. We expect the race to last about one hour, with roads opening up as the tail vehicle of the race passes. An estimated 10,000 runners will turn:

    • right onto Boylston Street
    • right onto Arlington Street
    • left onto Commonwealth Avenue outbound via the underpass at Massachusetts Avenue
    • left onto Charlesgate West
    • left onto Commonwealth Avenue inbound via the underpass at Massachusetts Avenue
    • right onto Hereford Street
    • left onto Boylston Street, and
    • left onto Charles Street.
    Invitational Mile

    The Invitational Mile will start after the 5K. Formation will be on Boylston Street prior to Dartmouth Street, and the route will be:

    • Boylston Street, left to Dartmouth Street
    • left to Newbury Street, and
    • left to Exeter Street. 
    Streets closed during the Mile:
    • Boylston Street, from Hereford Street to Clarendon Street
    • Newbury Street, from Clarendon Street to Fairfield Street
    • Exeter Street, from Newbury Street to Boylston Street

    Parking restrictions

    During Patriots Day Weekend, you won’t be able to park on several streets in the Back Bay on Saturday, April 13, and Monday, April 15. We also restrict some streets several days in advance of the weekend. Parking restrictions are as follows:
