Patriots Day weekend 2017

We have information about parking and street closures for the Boston Marathon, Patriots Day Parade, BAA 5K, Invitational Mile, and Kids Relay Races.

The Boston Marathon and the City’s Patriots Day Parade will be held on Monday, April 17. The BAA 5K, Invitational Mile, and the Kids Relay Races will be held on Saturday, April 15. These events will affect the Back Bay and North End, as well as Government Center over the Patriots Day weekend.

On Patriots Day, April 17:
  • All City buildings, including schools and libraries, are closed.
  • Parking meters are free with no time limit. But, you won't be able to park at many metered locations in the City. Please check posted signs on the street.
  • Trash and recycling collection is delayed in some neighborhoods. Please check your schedule.
  • Daytime street cleaning is canceled, but overnight street sweeping Monday night into Tuesday is on a normal schedule.

    Marathon Monday street closures

    The following streets will be closed to traffic on Monday, April 17:

    • 5 a.m.: Charles Street, adjacent to the Boston Common will close.
    • 8 a.m.: All streets east of Massachusetts Avenue in the Back Bay (as well as Massachusetts Turnpike Exit 22) will close.
    • 9 a.m.: All streets west of Massachusetts Avenue in the Kenmore Square Audubon Circle area will close.
    • 8:30 a.m.: All streets in the Brighton area leading to the route will close.

    Boylston Street, from Berkeley Street to Arlington Street, will close at noon (12 p.m.) on Sunday, April 16. The street will reopen at 8 p.m. on Monday. We expect to open all other streets at 7 p.m.

    Monday parade street closures

    The Patriots Day Parade starts at 9:15 a.m. at City Hall Plaza. Participants will march from:

    • Cambridge Street to Tremont Street
    • left to Bromfield Street
    • left to Washington Street, right to State Street
    • left to Congress Street (east side of roadway)
    • right to Hanover Street, and
    • ending at the Paul Revere Mall.

    Streets along the route will be closed to traffic briefly as the parade proceeds.

    April 15, 2015, marked the beginning of a new annual Boston tradition.

    Saturday street closures

    On Saturday, April 15, we will close streets along the routes of the B.A.A. 5K, the B.A.A. Invitational Mile and the Kids Relay Races to traffic. We expect to open these streets up by 4:30 p.m.

    B.A.A. 5K

    At 6 a.m., we will prohibit traffic from Charles Street, between Boylston Street and Beacon Street. The 5K starts at 9:30 a.m. on Charles Street near the Center Gate of the Public Garden. The race is expected to last about one hour, with roads opening up as the tail vehicle passes. We're expecting about 10,000 runners.

    The race course turns:
    • right onto Boylston Street
    • right onto Arlington Street
    • left onto Commonwealth Avenue outbound via the underpass at Massachusetts Avenue
    • left onto Charlesgate West
    • left onto Commonwealth Avenue inbound via the underpass at Massachusetts Avenue
    • right onto Hereford Street
    • left onto Boylston Street, and
    • left onto Charles Street.
    Invitational Mile

    Following the 5k, the Invitational Mile will start. We close these streets:

    • Boylston Street, from Hereford Street to Clarendon Street
    • Newbury Street, from Clarendon Street to Fairfield Street, and
    • Exeter Street, from Newbury Street to Boylston Street.
    Kids Relay Races

    The Kids Relay Races will start at 2 p.m. at Copley Square Park. About 1,000 children are expected to take part in the event. The race starts at Boylston Street and Clarendon Street, where they run to Dartmouth Street, make a U-turn and repeat.

    Parking restrictions

    During Patriots Day Weekend, you won’t be able to park on several streets in the Back Bay on Saturday and Monday. We also restrict some streets several days in advance of the weekend. Parking restrictions are as follows:

    No Stopping April 5 to April 20

    Boylston Street (both sides); Exeter Street to Dartmouth Street
    Boylston Street, from Dartmouth Street near the Copley Square Mall to Clarendon Street
    Exeter Street (east side); Boylston Street to Blagden Street
    Blagden Street (south side); Huntington Avenue to Exeter Street

    No Stopping April 10 to April 20

    Blagden Street (north side); Dartmouth Street to BPL Driveway

    No Parking April 11 to April 18, BAA Vehicles Only
