A message from Commissioner McCosh: Staying involved in your community
A weekly message from Commissioner McCosh in support of the local disability community.
Dear Disability Community Members,
Here we are in September! As we have discussed, with the fall comes a lot of change. Here in Boston, September 1st often means moving day. Both for students and long time residents of Boston. For those of you who moved, this week’s newsletter is especially for you! For those of you who did not move this past week, I hope you learn some new information about the resources the City has to offer its residents.
Neighborhood Resources
Did you know that the City has a webpage where you can put in your address and find your local representatives and public resources near you? My Neighborhood allows you to type in your address and see when trash and recycling pick up is, find local parks and community centers, and find out who your City Councilor is. You can even find out when street cleaning is so you can avoid those pesky street cleaning parking tickets!
Get out and Explore!
Now that you have moved and know the critical information such as when your trash gets picked up each week, go explore your neighborhood! Four Boston Center for Youth and Families indoor pools were just opened with new safety protocols and a reservation system to ensure physical distancing. If outdoor activities are more your speed, check out a park in your area and enjoy the fresh air or participate in an outdoor fitness class. Once you have worked up an appetite exploring, check out some of the local restaurants in your neighborhood either for a sit-down meal or for take-out.
COVID-19 Testing Sites
Living in a new area and think you might have been exposed to COVID? Find out what community health centers and other sites are offering COVID testing on our City map of testing sites
Voting and Polling Locations
The Primary election has come and gone and now we focus on the General election! Find out your voting status and where your polling location is. If you have moved, be sure to update your voter registration by October 24th in order to participate in the November 3rd Presidential election.
As a reminder, in addition to voting, we are asking everyone to take the 2020 US Census - September 30th is the deadline! Your voice matters and we want you to be counted. It only takes a few minutes so take a break from unpacking and fill it out!
As always, please feel free to reach out to us if you need assistance. You can dial 311 to reach City Hall, or call us and leave a message at 617-635-3682. If you prefer to reach out via email, our email is disability@boston.gov and the latest updates are available at Boston.gov.
Until next week, please stay informed, go explore, get involved, and stay safe.
Sincerely,
Commissioner Kristen McCosh
