Join the City of Boston's Internal Affairs Oversight Panel
The Boston City Council has announced the application process for individuals to apply to be a nominee for the Internal Affairs Oversight Panel.
The Internal Affairs Oversight Panel currently has two (2) vacancies to be filled by Mayoral appointment from nominees submitted by the Boston City Council.
Residents can now apply to be one of the six (6) nominees to be submitted by the Boston City Council, of which two (2) will be appointed to serve on the Board. The deadline to submit an application is Saturday, November 30, 2024.
About the Internal Affairs Oversight Panel:The Internal Affairs Oversight Panel is a board consisting of five (5) total members. The Internal Affairs Oversight Panel’s primary responsibilities include reviewing completed investigations of the Boston Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division.
Two (2) members, by statute, are appointed by the Mayor from a pool of six (6) nominees submitted by the Boston City Council.
Under the Ordinance, Board members must:- be Boston residents, and
- should be a licensed attorney, experienced in civil rights advocacy, experienced in youth advocacy, and/or have past experience and knowledge of law enforcement
Board members shall each serve a term of three (3) years, and shall not serve more than two (2) consecutive three-year terms.
Each member will be paid one hundred dollars ($100.00) per hour for their service, not to exceed fifty thousand dollars ($50,000) per year. Members of the Civilian Review Board are designated special municipal employees.
Duties of the Board:- Provide external oversight of Boston Police internal affairs investigations
- Periodically review policies and procedures regarding the integrity of the complaint and internal affairs process
- Make recommendations for further investigation to OPAT Staff or the Chief of BPD’s Bureau of Professional Standards, and make recommendations to the Police Commissioner regarding reviewed cases
- Produce an annual report to the Mayor and Police Commissioner documenting cases reviewed and outcomes of the Board’s reviews
- Convene all Board members at least once per quarter, but more often at the discretion of the Board
