City Council urges Senate to pass NO BAN Act

On Wednesday July 22, the House of Representatives passed the National Origin-Based Antidiscrimination for Nonimmigrants (NO BAN) Act, introduced by Representative Judy Chu in April 2019.

This Act repeals the 2017 immigration ban which targeted visitors from a number of predominantly Muslim countries, prevents future bans like it, and expands antidiscrimination provisions in US immigration law.

Arab American Institute Executive Director Maya Berry said, “Passage of the NO BAN Act in the House is an indication that policy makers have heard the demands to the American people in support of immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers — in support of humane immigration policies that reject xenophobia.”

Sen. Chris Coons (DE) also introduced a companion bill in the Senate in April 2019.

The City Council adopted a resolution urging the Senate to pass S.1123 and commends the House of Representatives for their clear and necessary stand against xenophobic and discriminatory policies.
