April is National Arab American Heritage Month
April is recognized as National Arab American Heritage Month across the United States to celebrate the Arab American heritage and culture, and pay tribute to the contributions of Arab Americans.
For over a century, Arab Americans have been making valuable contributions to every aspect of American society in medicine, law, business, technology, civic engagement, government and culture.
Arab Americans have historically encountered and continue to face prejudices such as civil rights abuses, harmful stereotyping and bullying that the Council believes should be addressed through public education, awareness and policies that are culturally competent.
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is home to nearly 80,000 Arab Americans with 7,500 residing in Boston. This week, the Council adopted a resolution offered by Councilor Essaibi-George, supporting the designation of Arab American Heritage Month. With this resolution the Council also opposes the harmful treatment Arab Americans receive and esteems the integral role Arab Americans play in the economy, culture and identity of Boston.
