Age Strong Blog: Age Strong’s Senior Advisory Council

On the first Friday of every month, Age Strong’s Senior Advisory Council, made up of older adults across Boston’s neighborhood, meets to learn about and discuss issues and information affecting the city’s older adult community (age 60+). 

October’s meeting covered Age Strong’s upcoming city-wide needs assessment including surveys and focus groups inviting older adults to give their input and feedback on living in the city – from programs to services, to information and benefits. The survey, available in 12 different languages, can be picked-up at city hall, printed and mailed in, or taken online here.

Age Strong’s Director of Constituent Services, Deolinda DaVeiga, presented the upcoming annual  Medicare open enrollment period. Older adults, even if already on Medicare, should speak with a certified SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs for Everyone) counselor to assess health insurance and prescription drug plans to get the best coverage for the lowest cost. The Office of Emergency Management’s Ky’Ron Owens, outlined how their department serves the city, as well as upcoming trainings for residents in preparedness and safety. To learn more about The Office of Emergency Management visit their website.  

Age Strong Commissioner Emily Shea closed the meeting with upcoming information and deadlines for the upcoming election, early voting, in-person voting, absentee ballots, and becoming a poll worker. She also urged council members to also attend the upcoming Mass Senior Action Council meeting to discuss the issue of rising residential property taxes in Boston.
