Last summer, we welcomed a dynamic cohort of interns to the City of Boston—undergraduate and graduate students representing over 15 colleges and universities, from local institutions like Boston University and UMass Amherst to programs across the country. Through partnerships with community organizations and national fellowship programs, these students brought a range of lived experiences, academic backgrounds, and professional goals to city government.
Interns were placed across more than 20 departments and offices, working on projects related to economic opportunity, education, housing, language access, sustainability, communications, equity, and more. Whether stationed at City Hall, the Bolling Building, or 1010 Mass Ave, our interns played an essential role in advancing the City’s mission and engaging directly with Boston residents.
The expanded Professional Development Program offered interns a four-part workshop series designed to explore public service careers, build workplace skills, and strengthen networks. Interns also participated in a collaborative Summer Group Project, researching City initiatives and proposing creative ways to share these programs with broader audiences. Together, they explored what it means to serve—and how their voices can shape the future of local government.
Last SUMMER, OUR INTERNS:
- Helped roll out TranslateLive devices across City departments by creating flyers, how-to videos, and training materials
- Created a language access hub page dedicated to communication-related disabilities
- Researched alternative funding strategies for Boston Public Schools and built a tailored funding model
- Drafted memo and fee structure options to improve Plaza rental processes and increase revenue
- Supported the Boston Reads literacy initiative, publishing “Story Stop” pages on Boston.gov
- Managed social media and external messaging for BCYF Creates and youth sports directories
- Assisted in flag raisings and delegation visits, capturing photography and managing event logistics
Developed LCA translation services form and conducted a language data project - Built an internal Citywide partnership database to strengthen institutional collaborations
- Conducted waste diversion policy research, benchmarking best practices from other cities
- Supported Youth Speaks Boston research through transcription and thematic analysis of focus groups
And so much more!
