Latin Quarter Cultural District

Hyde/Jackson Square is a very diverse neighborhood with a strong immigrant community.

The district is known for its many Latino specialty shops, restaurants, and businesses.

About the district

Geography of the district

The district is located in Jamaica Plain's Hyde/Jackson Square. The area has more than 125 businesses. Sixty-five percent of these businesses are immigrant-owned. The district is home to cultural institutions, including:

  • the Blessed Sacrament Campus
  • Mozart Park, and
  • the Connolly Branch of the Boston Public Library.
History of the district

The Mass Cultural Council designated the Latin Quarter cultural district in May 2018. It is the fourth cultural district in the City. The district is known for being an area where Latino immigrants have thrived for decades. The neighborhood has seen an increase in young professionals, artists, and families moving into the area. It's now one of Boston's most diverse communities.

The historic Blessed Sacrament Campus, operated by Hyde Square Task Force, is at the heart of the Latin Quarter. The task force is planning a community-focused redevelopment of the 100-year-old Blessed Sacrament Church.

Mission of the district

The mission of the district is to preserve the cultural identity of the changing neighborhood. The main goals are to establish a district that is:

  • a safe, clean, and diverse neighborhood
  • a dynamic, locally-owned business district that includes Latin foods, goods, services and specialty shops
  • a hub for the development and celebration of Latin and Afro-Latin art and cultural events, and
  • a destination for local residents, families, and tourists.
