Bike Share expansion 2017-2019

Between fall 2017 and fall 2019, we added 120 new bike share stations in Boston.

With your help, we found locations for over 120 new stations in Boston. We brought bike share to Mattapan, Roslindale and West Roxbury. We also installed new stations in high-demand areas near employment centers. Below, you will find documentation of our planning process.

We continue to add more stations in Boston. Check out our 2020-2021 system expansion!

New 2019 station locations

We found locations for 50 new bike share stations in 2019.

This expansion brought bike share to new parts of West Roxbury, Roslindale, and Dorchester. We also added more stations in neighborhoods with high use.

The Boston Transportation Department had planned this expansion with residents and community organizations since fall 2017. Our Active Transportation team hosted 42 public meetings and workshops. They attended a dozen neighborhood meetings and met with many community members and stakeholders. In 2018, we completed phase one of the bike share expansion, adding 51 stations across the City.

A map of installed and planned locations is below.

Location selection process

From June 2017 through spring 2018, you will have lots of opportunities to help us select where are our new stations will go!

  1. Share Information

    June – August 2017 (Completed!)

We are sharing information with neighborhood associations and community organizations across most of Boston about our planning process.
  2. Suggest via an Online Map

    June – November 2017 (Completed!)

Tell us where you want to see future stations! Visit suggest.thehubway.com to see where stations are today, add the locations you like, and share your thoughts on your neighbors' suggestions. We will use these suggestions to begin looking for great bike share sites.
  3. Participate in Workshops

    September – November 2017 (Completed!)

We are hosting dozens of public workshops across the City to share our preliminary thoughts on viable locations for bike share stations. You and your neighbors will work together around our maps, discuss the best options, and suggest other locations we could explore. Each workshop focuses on the surrounding neighborhoods, but materials will be available to discuss all neighborhoods under consideration for the expansion. You are welcome to join any workshop.
  4. Attend Open Houses

    March – April 2018 (Completed!)

We scheduled 11 open house events to show maps of our proposed station sites. Drop in and let us know what you think!
  5. View Proposed Maps

    March – May 2018 (Completed!)

We used your suggestions from the public workshops and online maps to find more than 120 locations that meet or exceed the technical needs for a bike share station. You can give your input on station locations through mid-May.
  6. Get Ready to Ride

    Summer 2018 (Completed!)

After collecting your final comments on our proposed maps, we obtained permits for nearly 60 new locations. We posted these locations online, below. Stations were placed in waves and turned on as soon as they're installed.
  7. Continued Expansion Announced

    April – Summer 2019 (Completed!)

We are sharing information with neighborhood associations and community organizations, with a focus in southern Dorchester, East Roslindale, and West Roxbury. We had an online survey and hosted meetings. Stations were installed in late 2019 and early 2020.

2019 meetings and station surveys

Thank you to everyone who hosted us at their meetings, attended our meetings, or provided comments on our surveys! We're grateful for your input as we selected 25 additional locations for bike share stations.

2018 station surveys

Thank you to everyone who provided comments on our surveys! We received more than 1600 comments before closing the surveys on June 1.

Across Boston, we identified nearly 140 potential sites from which we will select 70-80 new stations to add this year. We have:

  • grouped the locations by geographic area
  • provided a map of all of the locations, and
  • created surveys that show the specific locations where the bike share stations will be placed.

We need you to help us narrow down the list of sites by:

  • telling us which locations you like and which locations you have concerns about, and
  • sharing the surveys with other people in your community

We'll accept comments through mid-May.

2018 open houses on potential locations

Open Houses are part of the final planning phase for our 2018-19 expansion. We will have a map of possible locations for bike share stations and graphics for each location. Drop in at any time during these open houses and stay for as long as you need. There will be no formal presentation.

2017 expansion planning schedule

Thank you to everyone who participated in our fall 2017 workshops!

We hosted dozens of public workshops across the City in the fall of 2017. You and your neighbors worked together around our maps, discussed options for new station locations, and suggested the locations we should explore. Suggestions from these workshops and our online suggestion map are the basis for our preliminary maps, to be released in early 2018.

Participants focused on the workshop's neighborhood, but materials were available to discuss all neighborhoods under consideration for the expansion. You were welcome to join any workshop and as many workshops as you'd like. Snacks were provided by our friends at CLIF.
