Auto Shop Documents
The City of Boston’s Auto Unit inspects and licenses auto related business to make sure they meet City codes.
Our goal is to reduce the impact auto body shops may have on neighborhoods and the environment through enforcement, inspections, and education. All businesses that store, repair, or sell cars and products must apply for a license from the Boston Inspectional Services Department. New license holders are subject to a $100 license fee and renewed on an annual basis. Payments may be submitted in the form of a check or money order made payable to the City of Boston.
The auto shop license can be obtained from the Boston Inspectional Services Department. The following permits (if applicable) must be acquired in order to receive an Auto Shop License:
- Occupancy Permit, indicating the allowed use of the property
- BFD Flammable Storage, required to store flammable or combustible materials inside a building
- BFD Annual Permit, permit for torches, spray paint/booths
- A Site Cleanliness License, for businesses that use bulk dumpsters
- Business Certificate
- Workers Compensation Insurance
- Class Two License, for the sale of used vehicles on your lot
- Use of Premises, store or sell cars in an open space
- Registered Shop (for autobody and glass repair only)
