Friends of the Public Garden is excited to host the third annual Backyard Bash—the perfect way to wrap up the Fierce Urgency of Now Festival! Join us in celebration as we close out the festival with great music, lawn games and activities, frozen delights, sparkling mocktails, and great company. The Backyard Bash is a fantastic opportunity to unwind, socialize, and make new friends and lasting memories.

Join us on Thursday, September 19 from 6 - 8 p.m. at in Dewey Square for a free, all-ages evening of performance, drag, dance, music and art-making as we mark the opening of Jeffrey Gibson's new mural, your spirit whispering in my ear, on The Greenway in partnership with MASS MoCA!

Gibson's mural ushers in the 10th installation of The Greenway's rotating mural program on Dewey Square. Bring your friends and come ready to dance and celebrate!

The event will feature Greenway food trucks offering both vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals for purchase, including Zaaki, Vaz & Mac, Jamaica Mi Hungry, and Cookie Monster.

Night Shift Brewing will offer beer, wine, and alcoholic beverages for purchase for visitors 21+.

The Seafood Throwdown competition will feature two local chefs creating a seafood dish, and accompanied by seasonal vegetables grown by farmers market vendors.

The event is an educational tasting event that will feature a Mixologist offering innovative mocktails you can make at home using fresh and local ingredients. The event is accompanied by Deep House Music by DJ Christopher Martin Grant. A Chef demo will offer tasty bites from Haley House.

Films at the Gate, an event organized and run by ACDC youth, revives the tradition of the Chinatown movie house. The festival enlivens Chinatown, bringing together people of all backgrounds and ages, while also introducing kung fu films to a new generation and restoring a tradition of shared, public experience of Chinese-language films in Chinatown. 

Films at the Gate is a FREE event, open to all! Since 2006, Films at the Gate has been a grassroots event attracting over 700 attendees annually to Chinatown’s under utilized spaces.

“Kayak the Night” is funded through the Office of Nightlife Economy at the City of Boston. Each event will have food, kayaking and fun. This is a substance-free event that children and adults are invited to attend.

We will have Coast-Guard approved lights for safety on kayaks as well as two safety boats that will be able to provide kayakers with support should they need it. You need to reserve a date/spots in order to attend the event. Reservations can be done by emailing mvillagomez@piersparksailing.org with the number of people that are attending and what date you’re hoping to attend. Folks with disabilities are welcome and encouraged to participate and we will have activities for them as well.
