Shirley-Eustis Place Landmark Designation

Join Mayor Kim Janey and The Boston Landmarks Commission Friday, August 20, at 1:30 p.m. to honor the too often untold, unrecorded, and unrecognized history of enslaved people in Boston and on the Shirley-Eustis Place grounds.

Mayor Kim Janey, the Boston Landmarks Commission commemorates the designation of Shirley-Eustis Place in Roxbury as a historical landmark. With the Shirley-Eustis Houses well-known historical significance of former Governors Shirley and Eustis comes a hidden history that is often untold, unrecorded, and unrecognized. Ongoing research and oral history in Roxbury suggests that the lands were built, kept, and managed by enslaved people. Mayor Janey’s support and commemoration of the designation expands the history that is often centered in Boston.

An in-person conversation with Patrick Radden Keefe will take place Sunday, September 19, 2021, at 2 p.m. at Old South Church in Boston (at the corner of Dartmouth and Boylston Streets at the Copley MBTA station). The event will also be livestreamed to the Mayor's Office of Arts and Culture Facebook page. 
 
"Empire of Pain" is a grand, devastating portrait of three generations of the Sackler family, famed for their philanthropy, whose fortune was built by Valium and whose reputation was destroyed by OxyContin. From the prize-winning and bestselling author of "Say Nothing", as featured in the HBO documentary, "Crime of the Century".
 
Books will be made available on site by Trident Booksellers.
 
This event is produced by The Mayor's Office of Recovery Services, The Mayor's Office of Arts and Culture, and RIZE Massachusetts. Learn more about how the City is celebrating National Recovery Month.

Patrick Radden Keefe is a staff writer at The New Yorker and the author, most recently, of the New York Times bestseller, "Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland", which received the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction, was selected as one of the ten best books of 2019 by The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune and The Wall Street Journal, and was named one of the “10 Best Nonfiction Books of the Decade” by Entertainment Weekly. His previous books are "The Snakehead" and "Chatter". In early June, we are hosting Charles T. Brown as a special edition of the T-Talk series hosted by the Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition, Powerful Pathways, and the Urban Outdoors Association.

This talk will highlight the adverse social, political, economic, and health impacts of racial disparities in transportation and mobility. We will explore the ways in which our research, planning, policy, and street design can and must be reimagined. Doing so will help us achieve greater mobility, health, and quality of life for Black Bostonians. Charles Brown will be joined by Elijah Evans of Bikes Not Bombs and Courtney Jacobovits, resident of Jamaica Plain, for a discussion after his presentation.

These talks are focused on those who live in the Mattapan, Dorchester, Roxbury, and Hyde Park areas as well as those who identify as Black, Indigenous, Person of Colour (BIPOC) although all are invited.
