Climate policy open house: Building emissions performance standards

The City of Boston is developing a new policy to curb carbon emissions from existing large buildings. We are hosting an open house to provide an update on our progress to date, and to dive into the policy design. This is the third of four open house meetings on the policy.

In the first open house in July, we shared some background on why we’re developing this new policy, defined what a performance standard is, laid out the process to develop it, and heard your questions, concerns, and ideas. In the second open house in September, we dove into the technical analysis and worked through some of the questions you shared in July. You may find meeting recordings, slides, and notes on our project page.

Join us at our third remote open house on Thursday, November 19, from 6 - 7:30 p.m. (Register for the event). During the third open house, we’re going to walk through the key components of the policy. This also includes updates from the Technical and Resident Advisory Groups, and breakout discussions to provide your feedback on the policy.

The performance standard was identified as a high-priority policy in the 2019 Climate Action Plan Update. This policy will reduce building emissions from existing large buildings — the fossil fuels burned to produce the energy used to heat, cool, and provide electricity to buildings. Retrofitting our buildings can improve energy efficiency, lower energy costs, enhance the health of our residents, and protect our climate
