The Roxbury Poetry Festival is a biennial event centering poetry in Roxbury. The inaugural festival is happening virtually with the exception of two evening events. The festival features several award-winning writers, panelists, and curators, and centers a keynote address from 2020 Pulitzer Prize winning poet, Jericho Brown. The day-long event culminates with:

• a Publisher’s Poetry Slam, sponsored by Button Poetry, that yields a book contract for a local writer, and
• a "Beast The Beat” concert battle highlighting local hip-hop artists.

Several poets will be reading original poems that celebrate Boston and remind people what a culturally exciting city it is to live and work in. The event is free and open to the public, and will also be livestreamed on the Mayor's Office of Arts and Culture Facebook page.

The selected poems will be displayed in Boston City Hall and will also be available in an online gallery.

Upham's Corner Arts and Innovation District

The workshops will be held on March 12 from 4 - 5:30 p.m., March 13 from 10 - 11:30 a.m., and March 14 from 10 - 11:30 a.m.



The theme of the workshops is “EN-JOY: I see U in Me - in a new perspective”. Through a childlike view with whimsical animations and characters, participants will learn and practice key elements of deep listening, differences, and similes (shadow work) in both larger group settings and smaller breakout sessions. In conjunction with her commissioned artwork, participants will be creating mobiles using templates Monika provides, or ones they create on their own. All ages are welcome (children must be accompanied by an adult), and residents of East Boston are especially encouraged to participate.



These three sessions are intended to build on each other, so participants are strongly encouraged to attend all three sessions. A Zoom link will be sent out to participants who fill out the form below. Individuals must register by March 11 at noon.

Monika’s project, "UNUS MUNDUS", is being funded by the City of Boston’s Percent for Art program. She aims to create a mesmerizing environment that invites the audience to mutual participation and resonates with the historical elements of the site.

During the talk, Monika will be in conversation with Director of Eastie Farm Kannan Thiruvengadam and the City of Boston’s Director of Public Art Karin Goodfellow. Monika will give a brief summary of her work and her plans for an upcoming series of experiential community workshops. The workshop methodology includes diverse animated characters, and defining words combined with a hands-on experience of creating a mobile to understand the concept of integrating our differences through perspective as a material.

There will be a question-and-answer session at the end of the artist talk where community members will be invited to ask questions. Spanish interpretation will be available during the event.
