ALRIGHT, led by Poet Laureate Porsha Olayiwola and creative and curator Cierra Peters, is an interactive arts experience and show that engages a conversation around the Black Diaspora and climate change. Inspired by Kendrick Lamar’s lyrics, “We gone be alright”, this art experience uses an Afro-futurist pedagogy to frame the role Black individuals have in writing and claiming a future we want to and can live in by their own design.

The event will feature music from DJ Real P, dance vignettes choreographed by KiKi at 4 Star Dance Studio, poetry from Crystal Valentine, a live performance from Fanta Vibez, and more. More than 1,000 butterflies decorated by Boston Public School students are now hanging on the second and third floors of City Hall. On Saturday, October 1, 2022, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., students and their families are invited to come see their butterflies! There will also be snacks, free COVID-19 test kits, and an opportunity to get COVID-19 vaccinations.

MORE ABOUT THE EXHIBIT

Butterflies to the right of a Visitor sign on the 3rd floor of Boston City Hall

The butterfly is often a symbol of migration. For Immigrant Heritage Month 2022, the City of Boston Mayor's Office for Immigrant Advancement invited Boston Public School students to decorate butterflies to celebrate their cultures and personal stories. More than a thousand students from K-12 submitted these butterflies. By hanging them in City Hall, this exhibit reminds people that they belong here and can take pride in their identities. Learn more about the exhibit.

Special thanks to the Mayor's Office of Arts and Culture, Boston Public Schools (BPS), BPS Arts Office, and the BPS Office of Multilingual and Multicultural Education for their partnership on this exhibit. We'd also like to thank the students for sharing their stories and all our BPS teachers, without whom this would not be possible. - Mayor's Office for Immigrant Advancement
