Safer and Accessible Goodearl Square Project
We’re investing in a safer, more accessible Goodearl Square.
Project Phase
Project Information
PLAN: East Boston, a neighborhood-wide planning initiative adopted in 2024, identified Goodearl Square for safety, accessibility, and state-of-good-repair upgrades. Located at the intersections of Saratoga Street, Barnes Avenue, and Bayswater Street, Goodearl Square is a major gateway to the Orient Heights Blue Line Station, the recently completed East Boston Senior Center, Constitution Beach, and the Mary Ellen Welch Greenway. However, the square is a hot spot for injury-causing crashes and has many noncompliant curb ramps, highlighting a need for safety and accessibility improvements. The City of Boston applied for and was granted a MassDOT Shared Streets and Spaces Grant to design and build safety improvements for this intersection.
DESIGN GOALS
- Improve safety by using designs that reduce the risk of serious crashes, with a focus on pedestrian safety.
- Ensure access for all by bringing curb ramps, and crosswalks into compliance with ADA accessibility standards.
- Support a vibrant, walkable neighborhood by improving access to key community destinations for people walking and biking.
- Repave roadways in the project area to ensure a safe, smooth surface in good repair.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
To increase your safety, improve accessibility, and modernize our local infrastructure, we are working on the following design elements:
- A pedestrian crossing island for the crosswalk across Saratoga Street just west of Barnes Ave. You will only have to cross one lane of traffic at a time.
- ADA-compliant crosswalks with accessible curb ramps and direct, unobstructed crossings.
- Curb extensions that will tighten turning movements and encourage slower turning speeds and increase the visibility of people walking, riding, or rolling.
- Raised crosswalks across Barnes Avenue at Saratoga Street and across Bayswater Street at Saratoga Street.
- Pavement markings that clearly show space for bikes, cars, buses, and pedestrians.
