North Beacon Street
We’re installing separated bike lanes on North Beacon Street from Everett Street to Vineland Street, and a new crosswalk west of Vineland Street. Installation is scheduled to begin as early as October 2024.
Construction UPDATE
Construction will resume Sunday, October 13!
Crews will work to complete striping work, including adding in all turn arrows and traffic clarification markings on October 13 and October 14. Flexpost installation is scheduled for October 16 - 18. This will complete the bulk of construction. We are working to confirm when the traffic signal changes will be made.
Please reach out to us with any questions, concerns, or comments.
SEPTEMBER 2024 UPDATE
We have completed the final design plans for North Beacon Street and are working with our contractor to schedule a construction start date. We aim to install design changes this fall as weather and contractor availability allows. Once work begins, construction may take 2-3 weeks to complete.
Once the start date is determined, crews will post signage along the corridor to notify abutters and about restrictions to parking during the work process. We will update the project webpage and send an email to the project email list.
We appreciate your patience during construction.
Design
We have illustrated the final design plans for North Beacon Street from Everett Street to Vineland Street.
Design Details
- Curb Ramps: We have upgraded many of the curb ramps at crosswalks along the corridor to be accessible. We are adding an additional crosswalk and ramps to the west of Vineland Street
- Pedestrian Safety:
- All pedestrian crossings across Arlington Street will be shorter, reducing your exposure to general vehicle traffic.
- Narrowed travel lanes will encourage lower traffic speed while maintaining similar capacity for volume of traffic.
- Separated bike lane: We’ll add a separate bike lane in both directions from Everett Street to Vineland Street. The bike lane will be separated from the general travel lane by a 3 foot painted buffer with flex posts every 20 feet.
- Traffic and Capacity:
- North Beacon Street will have two general travel lanes in either direction, with added turn lanes at several intersections where needed.
- We will re-time traffic signals where needed to keep traffic moving, safely.
- Parking:
- We understand the importance of on-street parking to the community. In order to install the bike lane, buffer, and traffic and turn lanes, a majority of the parking spaces on the street will be removed.
Why North Beacon
Everyone in Boston deserves safe streets
The Allston-Brighton Mobility Plan was adopted in May 2021. Through that planning process, residents identified North Beacon Street as part of a future continuous bicycle connection between Oak Square and Union Square via Faneuil Street, Market Street, and North Beacon Street.
This project is part of a bold plan for transforming Boston's streets to better serve people walking, rolling, and riding bikes. Over the next three years, we will expand our bike network so that 50% of residents will be a 3-minute walk from a safe and connected bike route.

To build on her commitment to create safe streets for all modes of transportation, Mayor Michelle Wu and the Boston Transportation Department (BTD) announced a 9.4 mile expansion of bike lanes providing key connections within the City’s existing bike network. To do this, Boston is expanding Bluebikes to accommodate rising demand, designing traffic-calmed streets by building speed humps and raised crosswalks, and hiring more staff to aid in the design process.
The announcement was covered by local news outlets.
