Boston MBTA Shutdowns 2025

This page offers information and resources for Boston residents impacted by MBTA shutdowns in 2025.  

The City of Boston is collaborating closely with community partners to ensure riders have access to vital information. Upcoming Diversions and Shutdowns

Upcoming Diversions and Shutdowns

April 11 - 14, and April 25 - 28.

Bowdoin Station will be closed, and Blue Line service will terminate at Government Center during the following dates:

  • Beginning at approximately 7 p.m. on Friday, April 11, and continuing through the weekend of April 12 - 13, and all day Monday April 14.
  • Beginning at approximately 7 p.m. on Friday, April 25, and continuing through the weekend of April 26 - 27, and all day Monday April 28.

Riders can board and disembark the Blue Line at Government Center, which is less than a quarter mile, or about a 4 -minute walk, from Bowdoin.

Riders should anticipate slightly longer time between trains of about 7 - 8 minutes beginning at 7 p.m. on March 21, April 14, and April 28 through the end of service changes.

This service change is in place for Maintenance of Way crews to perform critical infrastructure upgrade work.

MARCH 29 - 30

Red Line service will be suspended between JFK/UMass and Braintree during the weekend of March 29 - 30.

Free and accessible shuttle buses will make all stops between JFK/UMass and Braintree. 

Riders are strongly encouraged to use the Middleborough, Kington, and Greenbush Commuter Rail lines for fare-free service between Braintree, Quincy Center, JFK/UMass, and South Station. Commuter Rail schedules are available on mbta.com.  Travelling between Braintree and South Station on the Commuter Rail is about 24 minutes. Riders should note that regular Commuter Rail fares will be collected for travel beyond Braintree.  

This service change is in place to accomplish signal upgrade work on the Red Line.

April 1 - 9

Red Line service will be suspended between JFK/UMass and Ashmont/Mattapan from April 1 - 9.

Free and accessible shuttle buses will make stops at all Ashmont Branch and Mattapan Line stations. Riders using shuttle buses during these service changes should budget ample extra travel time.

  • Weekday shuttle buses between JFK/UMass and Ashmont will operate every 3 - 5 minutes all day.
  • Weekday shuttle buses between Ashmont and Mattapan will operate every five-to-six minutes all day
  • Weekend shuttle buses between JFK/UMass and Mattapan via Ashmont will operate every 8 - 12 minutes, with some shuttle buses terminating at Ashmont.

Riders are strongly encouraged to use the Fairmount Commuter Rail Line during this service change. Commuter Rail schedules are available on mbta.com.

Bus Route 18 will be detoured during this time period.

April 10 - 30

From April 10 - 30, all Red Line service between JFK/UMass and Ashmont will operate with shuttle trains. A shuttle train operates back and forth on a single track. Shuttle trains will operate on both tracks. Riders are encouraged to follow directions via signage and station personnel. Riders will experience longer wait times during this service change and should allow extra travel time.

April 11 - 13

Boston College Station will be closed beginning at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Friday, April 11, and continue through the weekend of April 12 - 13.

Riders can board and disembark at the intersection of Lake St and Commonwealth Ave, which is less than a 2-minute walk from Boston College Station.

April 5 - 6 and April 25 - 27

Newburyport/Rockport Commuter Rail Line service will be suspended on the weekend of April 5 - 6 and all day, Friday through Sunday, on April 25 - 27.

A dedicated diversion schedule will be available on mbta.com

Passengers should use Orange Line subway service between Oak Grove and North Station.

April 5 - 6 and April 25 - 27

Lowell Commuter Rail Line service will be suspended on the weekend of April 5 - 6 and all day, Friday through Sunday, on April 25 - 27.

A dedicated diversion schedule will be available on mbta.com

Free and accessible shuttle bus service will replace train service between Anderson/Woburn and North Station. Both local and express shuttle buses will operate.

April 11 - 13.

Lowell Commuter Rail Line service will be suspended between Forge Park/495 and Readville all day, Friday through Sunday, on April 11 - 13.

A dedicated diversion schedule will be available on mbta.com

Free and accessible shuttle bus service will replace train service between Forge Park/495 and Readville.

April 11

Lowell Commuter Rail Line service will be suspended between Foxboro and Readville on Friday, April 11.

A dedicated diversion schedule will be available on mbta.com

Free and accessible shuttle bus service will replace train service between Foxboro and Mansfield on the Providence Commuter Rail Line for continued service to South Station.

Bicycle Information

During the Red Line shutdown from April 1 - 9, riders are strongly encouraged to use bikes as an alternative mode of transportation. We are offering free BlueBikes unlocks during the shutdown, limited to five trips per user during each closure. The unlocks will be available while supplies last.
