Thetford Evans Playground
This year, the Mayor's budget enables us to focus on targeted playground upgrades. We're addressing outdated play equipment and safety surfacing.
We're making improvements to Thetford Evans Playground in Mattapan. We had a community workshop in October 2019. We've been working to incorporate all of the amazing feedback we received from the community at this workshop and in an online survey.
This design has been bid out and construction started fall of 2019. Posted in the related documents section below is a plan of the final design. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
About the design
The design re-imagines the space and re-orients that play.
The large mostly unused central paved area has been split into two areas to fit into the landscape. There is now a designated water play area. It could be used for events and markets. When the water is off, there's a second gathering area that has an ADA community table picnic area.
The older and younger children's structures will be replaced with new structures. A new 2- to 5-year-old climbing net will also be installed. We will still have three bays of swings. The swing bays will have:
- two belt swings
- two toddler bucket swings, and
- a dish rope seat swing that will allow multiple children to swing together.
We will be renovating the water play area and formalizing a play and picnic lawn. We will also be repairing fencing and repainting the wall separating the playground from the courts.
