Boston Curb Lab

The Office of Emerging Technology is bringing new solutions to curb management, made possible by the U.S. Department of Transportation SMART Grant.

The Curb Lab is leveraging artificial intelligence, machine learning, and modern data tools to one of Boston's oldest challenges: managing the edge of our streets.

As the demands of our city evolve, we're building cost-effective and replicable tools to meet the moment.

PROJECT GOALS

  1. Build a full digital map of every curb regulation in Boston. Anyone who uses Boston's curbs will have access to reliable and up-to-date information, in a single search.
  2. Standardize Boston's curb data, using the Curb Data Specification (CDS). This standard ensures that our open data is consistent, transparent, and enables future innovation.
  3. Use these tools to support residents and visitors. Introduce new tow zone alerts, track food delivery congestion and safety, review City signage, and more.

Chinatown Streets and Gate

The Boston Curb Lab aims to equip people in Boston with up-to-date and necessary information, for:
  • Residents to understand where they can park and for how long,
  • Delivery drivers to find safe and legal places to load and unload,
  • People with disabilities to identify accessible routes and drop-off zones,
  • Businesses to that depend on customers being able to stop, even briefly,
  • City leaders, urban planners, and researchers to have reliable curb data for informed decision making.
