Process Improvement Trainings - Bostonia Academy

We created a set of process improvement trainings to enable and empower municipal workers to make their day-to-day work easier, faster, and more efficient.

Since we launched our trainings in January 2024, we’ve trained over 200 employees from over 40 departments in basic process improvement methodologies. Our trainees’ innovations have saved thousands of constituent and employee hours per year by identifying areas of improvement and implementing low or no cost solutions.

Why We Did This

Process improvement doesn’t work unless you engage everybody.

We want to democratize process improvement knowledge across the city so we can better serve our constituents.

By giving municipal workers a different lens to see their work and tools to solve problems, we’re multiplying our impact exponentially. Workers also know their process, and its pain points, better than anyone else, so training them in process improvement results in efficiencies and solutions that we might’ve never found ourselves.

What We Did

We created three different training sessions that any city of Boston employee can take, along with optional certifications for each.

We hold each at least once every 2 months, and are constantly updating and improving our sessions:

  1. Silver Training - a 3.5 hour introduction to process improvement tools and how to use them. We teach trainees how to identify the steps that make up a process, how to identify the steps in a process that are causing inefficiencies and teach basic solutions tools on how to improve the problems that were identified.
  2. Gold Training - a 2.5 day training that goes into much more depth and detail than the Silver Training. We go over the same tools in addition to many more tools, methodologies, and practices. We also teach about change management -- how to navigate difficult situations and people who may be resistant to making a change.
  3. Process Improvement for Leaders Training -  a 3.5 hour training that teaches leaders how to cultivate an open environment with their direct reports that in turn encourages staff to implement employee-led innovations. Most often, after leaders attend this training they send their direct reports to the Silver and/or Gold Training(s).

Results

Our trainees have already created easier processes, shorter wait times, and thousands of hours of yearly time savings.

We're constantly adjusting our trainings and accepting new trainees for future process improvement trainings. We’re also excited to potentially expand our team, and our trainings, so we can help more municipal workers make the public sector more efficient! In the meantime, if you work for the city of Boston, come sign up!
