George Robert White Fund

Through a bequest of George Robert White in 1922 funds “works of public utility” for residents of Boston, to hold and manage the facilities constructed by the Fund and oversee its investments.

George Robert White was born on July 19, 1847 in Lynn, Massachusetts and moved to Boston at the age of 17 to seek employment after the death of his father in the Civil War. He was hired by the Potter and Weeks Drug Company and rose through the ranks of the firm becoming a partner at age 26, and then President at age 42 in 1889. A bachelor during his lifetime, he lived modestly while investing a good portion of his personal wealth in Boston real estate holdings, becoming one of Boston’s largest property holders by the time of his death in 1922. During his lifetime, he gave generously to institutions of medicine and culture including the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and Massachusetts General Hospital. He was also the driving force behind the funding and construction of Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in Mission Hill in 1918 (now referred to as Longwood Medical Center).  In his last will and testament, Mr. White bequested his real estate holdings to the City of Boston to establish a permanent fund whose income could be accumulated and utilized to create “works of public utility and beauty” for the residents of Boston.

ABOUT THE COMMISSION

The City of Boston has a variety of boards and commissions. Each work with internal departments and the public to serve the City.

Each board or commission has a specific number of members. Members go through an application process to ensure they have the expertise and passion for serving. Active members may become holdovers if their official term is up, but there is no new applicant to take their place.

Serving on a board or commission is one of the most impactful ways Bostonians can become active in their community. Read our guide if you are interested in applying.
