Project Goals

The site is 26,906 sq. ft. of vacant land on Melnea Cass Blvd/Windsor Street near the South End/Roxbury border. A community meeting was held in 2020 and support for preservation of the existing community garden and open space was strong. An RFP is was issued in 2021, and one proposal was received. United Neighbors of Lower Roxbury was selected as developer of the community garden and open space and sold the parcels in December 2022.

Construction on garden improvements started in December 2022 and will continue in spring of 2023.

Thanks to everyone who attended the developer presentation for Melnea Cass Blvd and Windsor Street Community Garden and Open Space Preservation. Support for UNLR's proposal was strong overall. Interes t in continued community engagement as improvement designs are refined was strongly expressed. UNLR, in turn, expressed an eagerness for continued input and conversation throughout the remainder of the design process. Please see the recording for more details.

On October 19th, the Public Facilities Commission voted to convey these parcels to the United Neighbors of Lower Roxbury. Please see the attached final garden design. Construction is expected to begin in December 2022!
