Install Or Repair A Fire Escape

You need certain permits and permissions if you want to install a new fire escape, or repair an existing fire escape.

Who can install and repair fire escapes?

You’ll need to hire a Massachusetts registered professional engineer or licensed fire escape installer to perform any repairs or installations on fire escapes. The professional will apply for the permit and complete the work.

Please note: All fire escapes must be re-certified by an engineer or fire escape installer every five (5) years.

What permits do I need?

Short-Form Permit
  • For work being done on an existing fire escape.
OR
Long-Form Permit
  • For installing a new fire escape.
Additional Information
  • We also require a completed Fire Escape and Fire Balcony Affidavit.
  • You must submit your Fire Escape and Fire Balcony Affidavit in person at the Inspectional Services Department (1010 Mass. Ave, 4th Floor, Boston, MA 02118).

The Short-Form and Long-Form Permit pages list the steps you need to take, including:
