How to apply for heat assistance

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program can help you pay your winter heating bills. If you're eligible, they'll make payments directly to your utility company. The program runs from November 1 - April 30. 

To be eligible, income must be at or below 60% of State Median Income. Check the income guidelines before you apply.

You can apply for heat assistance with the program through an Action for Boston Community Development center.

First, find the center in your neighborhood. Then, give them a call to make an appointment to apply for heat assistance.

Please bring as many documents as possible from the list below to your appointment:

• Proof of income for anyone who is 18 or older in your household. You'll need proof for the last 30 days. You'll need a letter from the school if anyone is a full or part-time college student.
• Picture ID for the head of household or person applying, such as a driver's license, state-issued ID card, Food Stamp card, U.S. Military card, or passport.
• Proof of Citizenship or Qualified Alien Status for all household members. This can be a U.S. Birth Certificate, Social Security Card, Valid U.S. Passport, Certificate of Naturalization, or Valid Permanent Resident Card. Please call ABCD for a complete list of acceptable documents.
• Please bring a copy of your most recent lease or paid rent receipt. If you're a homeowner, bring a copy of your mortgage statement.
• A copy of your most recent heating bill and utility bills. These may be for oil, gas, or electricity.
