Upcoming Diversions and ShutdownsApril 10 - 29
From April 10 - 29, all Red Line service between JFK/UMass and Ashmont will operate with shuttle trains. A shuttle train operates back and forth on a single track. A shuttle train will operate each both track. Shuttle trains will terminate at JFK/UMass. Riders will need to transfer from the Ashmont side of JFK/UMass station to the Braintree side for continued service towards Alewife, or southbound service to Braintree. Riders are encouraged to follow directions via signage and station personnel. Riders will experience longer wait times during this service change and should allow extra travel time.
April 29 - 30.
On the evening of April 29, through end of day on April 30, Red Line service will be suspended between JFK/UMass and Ashmont.
Riders can connect to Fairmount Commuter Rail service by using bus route 22 from Ashmont to Talbot Ave station
April 25 - 28.
Bowdoin Station will be closed, and Blue Line service will terminate at Government Center beginning at approximately 7 p.m. on Friday, April 25, and continuing through the weekend of April 26 - 27, and all day Monday April 28.
Riders can board and disembark the Blue Line at Government Center, which is less than a quarter mile, or about a 4 -minute walk, from Bowdoin.
Riders should anticipate slightly longer time between trains of about 7 - 8 minutes beginning at 7 p.m. on March 21, April 14, and April 28 through the end of service changes.
This service change is in place for Maintenance of Way crews to perform critical infrastructure upgrade work.
May 2 - 4.
Boston College Station on the B Branch will be closed beginning at approximately 9 PM on Friday, May 2, and continuing through the weekend of May 3 - 4.
Riders can board and disembark at the intersection of Lake Street and Commonwealth Ave, which is less than a 2-minute walk from Boston College Station.
This is to allow for maintenance work in the Boston College yard.
May 3 - 4 and May 31 - June 1
Red Line service will be suspended between JFK/UMass and Braintree during the weekends of May 3 - 4 and May 31 - June 1.
Free and accessible shuttle bus service will make all stops between Braintree and JFK/UMass.
Riders are strongly encouraged to use the Fall River/New Bedford, Kingston, and Greenbush Commuter Rail lines for fare-free service between Braintree, Quincy Center, JFK/UMass and South Station.
May 9 - 18.
Orange Line service will be suspended between North Station and Oak Grove beginning at approximately 8:30 PM on Friday, May 9, and continuing all day through May 18.
Free and accessible shuttle buses will make all stops between North Station and Oak Grove. Riders should budget ample extra travel time. For example, a rider traveling to Downtown Crossing from Oak Grove should budget an additional 45-60 minutes of travel time in addition to their regular commute.
Express shuttle buses will also serve Oak Grove, Malden Center, and North Station.
Accessible van service will be available on weekdays during this service change. Please see onsite personnel to request the accessible van.
Haverhill Commuter Rail Line service will be fare-free to/from Oak Grove, Malden Center, and North Station. Travel time between Oak Grove and North Station on the Haverhill Line is approx. 20 minutes.
Free Bluebike unlocks will be available during this shutdown. Refer to the Bicycle Information tab of this page for more information.
May 17 - 18.
Franklin/Foxboro Commuter Rail Line service will be suspended between Forge Park/495 and Readville during the weekend of May 17 - 18.
Free and accessible shuttle bus service will replace train service between Forge Park/495 and Readville.
Passengers are encouraged to consider the Providence and Fairmount Commuter Rail Lines for service between Readville and South Station.
May 30 - June 1 and June 20 - 22.
Framingham/Worcester Commuter Rail Line service will be suspended between Framingham and South Station beginning at approximately 11 PM on Friday, May 30, and continuing through June 1.
Free and accessible shuttle bus service will replace train service between Framingham and Riverside on the Green Line D Branch for continued service to and from Downtown Boston. Shuttle buses will serve Framingham, West Natick, Natick Center, Wellesley Square, Wellesley Hills, and Auburndale with a connection to Riverside.
An additional free and accessible shuttle bus service will operate between West Newton, Newtonville, Boston Landing, and Kenmore where riders can use the Green Line B, C, and D branches.
Commuter Rail service between Worcester and Framingham will be fare-free during this service change.
- For passengers who typically board at South Station, take the Red Line subway at South Station (Alewife - outbound) to Park Street. Then connect to the Green Line D Branch (Riverside - outbound) to connect to shuttle bus service.
- For passengers who typically disembark at South Station, disembark shuttle buses at Riverside for inbound Green Line service to Park Street and other downtown connections. At Park Street, connect to the Red Line (Ashmont/Braintree - outbound) to South Station.
Community members aiming to travel to and from downtown Boston during the weekend work are strongly encouraged to utilize the MBTA's shuttle bus alternatives. Major traffic delays are anticipated on portions of I-90 and I-95/Route 128.
May 30 - June 1.
Orange Line service will be suspended between Back Bay and Forest Hills, beginning approximately at 8:30 PM on Friday, May 30, and continuing through the weekend of May 31 - June 1.
Free and accessible shuttle buses will make stops at all stations between Back Bay and Forest Hills
Commuter Rail service will be fare-free between Forest Hills, Ruggles, Back Bay, and South Station.
Bicycle Information
During the Orange Line shutdown from May 9 - 18, riders are strongly encouraged to use bikes as an alternative mode of transportation. We are offering free BlueBikes unlocks during the shutdown, limited to five trips per user during each closure. The unlocks will be available while supplies last. Use code MAY25ORANGE.
