We respond to any public health or mental health crisis in our shelters and properties across the City of Boston. We do this work in partnership with Boston EMS, Boston Police, and other law enforcement agencies. Our goal is to protect and serve Boston's most vulnerable citizens. History of the team

  • Until 1996: The Health and Hospitals Police served the City Hospital and Long Island campus.  

  • 1996: The City Hospital merged into Boston Medical Center. The Boston Public Health Commission formed that year.  

  • 1996 - 2013: The Commission's Police Department served the Long Island campus.  

  • 2013: The Long Island bridge collapsed, resulting in the shutdown of the island. The responsibility of the Commission's Police Department shifted to:  
    • the 112 Southampton Street men's shelter 
    • Woods Mullen women's shelter 
    • Mattapan Recovery Campus 
    • and other satellite buildings and Boston EMS stations.  
  • 2021: The Commission's Department of Public Safety was formed.
